Ascension Day and Pentecost 2026 at Notre-Dame de Paris

As Ascension Day and Pentecost draw near, amidst the lingering joy of Easter, Our Lady invites everyone to celebrate Christ’s ascension and the gift of the Holy Spirit, the source of life and mission for the Church.

Feast of the Ascension

On 14 May, we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, which is an opportunity to contemplate, ‘together with the marvelling angels’, Christ entering the Father’s house. Celebrated forty days after Easter, the Ascension thus marks Christ’s entry into the glory of God.

They said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.”

Solemnity of Pentecost

Fifty days after Easter and ten days after the Ascension of the Lord, we celebrate Pentecost, which commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples, giving them the strength to proclaim the Gospel. The fire of the Holy Spirit thus spreads the new law of love into the hearts of believers, both Jews and Gentiles.

And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
