Betrayed by his disciple Judas, Christ is arrested. He is accused of sowing disorder in the population by his teachings and above all to usurp the title of Messiah, that is to say Sons of God sent to save men. Interrogated by Pontius Pilate, Roman governor of the region, flogged by the Roman soldiers, he was condemned to be nailed to a cross – a torment reserved for criminals. The Passion continues with the ascent of the hill of Golgotha, also called "Calvary", laden with the cross. It falls several times of exhaustion. Crucified, it expires after a few hours. Descended from the cross by his relatives, he is wrapped in a shroud and put to the tomb.

On this particular day, Christians are called to fasting, penance and conversion, and visible expression of the expectation of Christ. The office of Holy Friday, called Office of the Lord's Passion, is centered on the proclamation of the narrative of the Passion (Gospel according to Saint John). A path of the cross with the stages of the passion of Christ will be offered to the faithful in the afternoon as well as two prayer offices sung: The morning office and the Choral Office of Passion.
