The dimanche 13 avril 2014

Dimanche 13 avril 2014

Palm and Passion Sunday opens Holy Week, which ends Lent with Good Thursday, Good Friday, Good Saturday and the Easter Vigil. This week commemorates the last days of Christ (the Last Supper, his Passion, his death and Resurrection). These days are the highlight of the liturgical year and gather tens of thousands of faithful to Notre-Dame de Paris.

Six days before the Jewish Passover (which commemorates the departure of the Hebrews from Egypt after 400 years of slavery), Jesus returned to Jerusalem. The crowd covered the ground of Green Palms to cheer him on as he entered the city.

Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday and the Lord's Passion, which unites the triumph of Christ the King and the proclamation of his Passion.

It is in memory of this triumphal entrance to Jerusalem that the faithful carry branches (of boxwood, olive trees, laurel or palm trees...). These branches, once blessed, are held in the hands of the faithful who set out in procession: marching towards Easter of the people of God following Christ. During the celebration, the Passion of the Lord is read out, recounting all of Christ's sufferings from his arrest in the olive garden to his burial. This Passion is the mystery of Christ's Passover going towards death and offering his life out of love for the salvation of humanity. It is in Christ's Passion, inseparable from the Resurrection, that the Christian, through baptism, also makes the transition from death to life.
