Choir Stall Panels

(1710 - 1714)

Above the stalls are 16 natural oak panels, alternately oval and long square, depicting the life of the Virgin. These works were created between 1710 and 1714.

The Pulpit

by Mirgon, Corbon, Viollet-le-Duc (19th century)

The pulpit was created in 1868 by Mignon based on designs by Viollet-le-Duc. From this pulpit, preachers would traditionally address the faithful.

The Choir Stalls

(early 18th century)

Between 1710 and 1714, Robert de Cotte installed two rows of carved oak stalls. Above these, 22 natural oak panels were placed, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin.

Choir Screen, Scenes from the Life of Christ

(14th century)

The faithful of the past were fewer in number but seemingly noisier. Between 1300 and 1350, a wall was built to reduce noise in the choir, adorned with sculptures depicting scenes from the life of Christ. Learn more

Tombstone of Étienne Yver

(15th century)

Étienne Yver was a canon of Paris and Rouen, archdeacon of Grand-Caux, and a royal advisor, buried in the Sainte-Clotilde Chapel.

Statue of the Virgin of the Students

by Antoine Vassé (1722)

The sculptor Antoine Vassé created this statue in 1722 at the request of Cardinal de Noailles to decorate the altar of the Virgin in a chapel that no longer exists. Today, this statue is revered as the “Virgin of the Students.”

Statue of Saint Denis Preaching the Faith

by Nicolas Coustou (1722)

Saint Denys was the first bishop of Paris, martyred in 250. His statue was commissioned by Cardinal Louis-Antoine de Noailles, Archbishop of Paris from 1695 to 1729. It adorns the altar of the Saint-Denys Chapel at the entrance of the choir.

Effigy of Simon Matifas de Bucy

(14th century)

Simon Matifas de Bucy, bishop of Paris from 1290 to 1304, is buried in the chapel of Notre-Dame of Sorrows.

Statue of Louis XIV

by Antoine Coysevox (1715)

To the left of the Pietà, the statue of Louis XIV is shown kneeling with his hand on his heart. This sculpture is the work of Coysevox, uncle of Nicolas and Guillaume Coustou. Learn more

Statue of Louis XIII

by Guillaume Coustou (1715)

The statue of Louis XIII, located to the right of the Pietà, depicts him offering his crown and scepter to the Virgin at his request. This marble work is by Guillaume Coustou, brother of Nicolas Coustou. Learn more
