Hail Mary

Eudes de Sully, bishop of Paris between 1196 and 1208, wrote the Hail Mary by adding a conclusion to the Antiphonies dedicated to Mary, sung during the Annunciation and Visitation festivals which were based on the words spoken by the archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary. This prayer spread to all of Europe along with the synodal statutes that Eudes de Sully promulgated for the Paris diocese and that inspired many other bishops.

Hail Mary,
Full of grace.
Our Lord is with you.
Blessed are you
Among women
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us,
Poor sinners,
Now and at the hour
Of our death.
